Introduction to Encaustic Painting
Encaustic painting is an ancient technique using heated paint made from pigment, beeswax & damar resin along with heat to create luminous paintings. If you’ve ever been curious about encaustics, you’re in for a treat!
This workshop covers a brief history of this ancient medium, equipment, studio set up, preparing paint surfaces, mixing colors and adding other media. You will be able to try a variety of tools to create different results.
This workshop can refresh and expand existing skills in encaustic and provide an artist new to the medium with the knowledge to pursue your own encaustic practice.
Class Requirements
No experience needed.
Students must be able to hold heat guns or butane torches.
Please wear old clothing and comfortable shoes to stand and work in.

Encaustic Photo Transfer Prints
The technique of encaustic photo transfer printing opens up a realm of possibilities! Create works of art that showcase personal photographs and images layered with translucent encaustic paint. These works can also incorporate text, collage, all kinds of natural mixed media, to create unique and often very personal works of art.
This workshop can introduce and expand existing skills in encaustic and provide an artist new to the medium with the knowledge to pursue your own encaustic practice.

What you'll learn
Students will learn to prepare a board for encaustic painting.
Students will become comfortable with encaustic studio tools including heat guns, butane torches and hot plates.
Students will learn how to transfer photocopies onto encaustic medium.
Encaustic Leaf Stencils
Encaustic is a medium that lends itself to many different techniques. You can paint with it, cast it, carve it, layer it, transfer prints on to it. It also works beautifully to create stencils and prints from leaves and other natural materials and shapes. This technique can be used to create richly detailed images of individual leaves and it can be incorporated into larger encaustic pieces.

Students will gather a variety of leaves and other materials to create encaustic stencils.
Encaustic Monoprint
Encaustic is a medium that can be used to create or enhance mono prints. You can print images from paint applied directly to a hot plate. You can use encaustic paint to enhance and add color to existing prints to make unique editions.
Ages 16+.

Bring existing prints or paper (printmaking paper or Japanese Rice Paper you wish to work on [some paper will be provided]
Students must be able to hold heat guns or butane torches.
Experience with encaustic helpful but not required.
What you'll learn
Students will learn to work with encaustic paint on paper
Students will become comfortable with encaustic studio tools including heat guns, butane torches and hot plates.
Students may create unique mono prints with encaustic paint and other media such ink
Encaustic Collage
Encaustic is a medium that works brilliantly with collage and is enhanced with techniques like accretion to create texture and depth in your work. Most natural materials can be used, such as old seeds, paper, fabrics like cottons, small pebbles, metals like pennies, copper or steel wire. natural inks can be added and it can be applied to most terracotta or pottery forms. It works brilliantly with oil sticks & oil pastels. Bring your materials and your imagination to explore encaustic collage

Bring materials to work with and boards for support [some materials and boards will be provided]
Students must be able to hold heat guns or butane torches.
Experience with encaustic helpful but not required.
